Copepods in Barrier Reef Marine Aquariums

Copepods are small crustaceans playing an important role in marine food webs. They are most important within barrier reef ecosystems, where they are ecologically important as the food of fishes and other marine animals of a large number of species. In marine aquariums, copepods can also play an important role in maintaining a healthy and balanced ecosystem.
Copepods are often fed in marine aquaria as prey for fish and other marine animals. They can be obtained in aquarium shops or at other aquariums. Copropeds play a role in maintaining aquarium cleanness besides serving as food, through scubbing off excess algae and other organic debris fallout. There is one of the difficulties to ensuring a healthy copepod population in a marine tank (such as a marine aquarium) keeping optimal conditions for growth and reproduction.
Copepods inhabit a homogeneous environment with respect to the desired temperature, salinity, and water quality. They also require a food web, for instance phytoplankton, zooplankton and small animals. [Copepods are used as food for keeping a healthy copepod population in a marine aquarium]It is necessary to ensure a varied and balanced nutrition for the copepods.
This can include feeding them a variety of different types of phytoplankton and zooplankton, as well as supplementing their diet with other types of food such as fish food or shrimp pellets. Water quality also needs to be monitored and the aquarium has to be properly filtered and kept. Beyond build an ideal setting for copepods, there is a value to follow population of copepods and change feeding parameters, as well as other parameters, when needed.
Oversupply may lead to water body eutrophication, and subsequently to algae blooms and other catastrophes. Underfeeding has been shown to lead to reduction of copepod abundance and disruption of ecosystem homeostasis. And thus, copepods, as a crucial component of the barrier reef marine ecosystem, could be of a pertinent role in the resilience and stability of a marine aquarium. Aquarium keeping can be aided by providing the appropriate conditions as well as a varied and rich food supply, in which copepods can flourish, and thus play an important role in the health of the aquarium ecosystem.
