Skimmers are devices that help in eliminating organic waste from aquariums by creating a foam that attracts waste particles.
The skimmer works by creating a column of air bubbles that rises through the water. As the bubbles rise, they attract and trap organic matter, which is then skimmed off the top of the water and collected in a cup. The skimmer also helps to oxygenate the water, which is important for the health of the reef inhabitants. There are many different types of skimmers available, including hang-on-back skimmers, in-sump skimmers, and external skimmers. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice will depend on the size of the tank, the type of inhabitants, and the owner’s preferences. Without skimmer in my opinion the water quality would quickly deteriorate, putting the health and well-being of the inhabitants at risk. With regular maintenance and cleaning, the skimmer will help to keep the water in the tank clean and healthy for years to come.
The basic components of a skimmer are a reaction chamber, a pump, an air intake, and a collection cup. The reaction chamber is where the mixing of water and air occurs, and the pump is used to move the water through the chamber. The air intake is responsible for supplying air to the chamber, while the collection cup collects the foam that rises to the surface.
There are different types of skimmers available in the market, including venturi, needle wheel, and bubble plate skimmers. Venturi skimmers use the pressure difference between the water and air to create bubbles, while needle wheel skimmers use a rotating impeller to create smaller bubbles. Bubble plate skimmers have a perforated plate that creates bubbles by introducing air into the water.
Several factors can affect the performance of skimmers, including water flow rate, salinity, temperature, and pH. It is essential to ensure that the skimmer is appropriately sized for the aquarium and the number of inhabitants. Skimmers require regular maintenance, including cleaning the reaction chamber and replacing the collection cup.
In my opinion the Skimmers are important equipment for maintaining the water quality in marine aquariums.
