The Mitrax crab

The Mitrax crab, or Mitre crab, is a relatively common pet crab choice for the aquarium enthusiast, not only because of its striking morphology but also for its intriguing behaviour. These crabs are small and can be held in many marine aquariums, such as reef tanks and fish-only tanks.
For setting up the aquarium of Mitrax crabs it is necessary to ensure the crabs with maximum number of hiding spots and an appropriate substrate. They would rather occupy or settle among live rock or coral rubble, offering them refuge and opportunities for foraging food. Mitrax crabs are generalists who eat almost any type of food, from meaty items such as shrimp and fish, to algae and plant material. They should be fed a healthy diet in order to keep them healthy and active. Another behaviour of the Mitrax crab is its capacity to camouflage. They tend also to cover themselves with algae and other debris so as to become camouflage and unnoticed by predators.
This is the case in the aquarium, where the crabs tend to grab and eat pieces of algae and cover themselves with it. Mitrax crabs are also famous for their territoriality, and defending their space from other crabs is a strong characteristic. They need to be provided with adequate space in the aquarium so as not to get into a fight with other tank residents. The Mitrax crab is an interesting species capable of being a valuable addition to a marine aquarium. They are very easy to keep and their distinctive look and behaviour is one of the reasons they are very popular with hobbyists.
