Cyanobacteria in Barrier Reef Aquariums: A Growing Concern

Cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, are an increasingly problematic phenomenon in barrier reef aquaria. These bacteria can proliferate rapidly and form unsightly blooms that can damage the general well being of an aquarium ecosystem.
Excess nutrients, including nitrates and phosphates, are one of the major causes of cyanobacteria bloom in aquariums, which originates from over feeding process, the decomposition of organic matter, and insufficient filtration. On the other hand, insufficient flow of water and lighting are also known to promote the proliferation of cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacterial blooms can negatively affect the aquarium’s inhabitants, the fish, corals, and other invertebrates. Bacteria can excrete toxic substances to injure the animals, and compete for the animals with the animals.
In order to prevent cyanobacteria blooms, the aquarists’ water quality must be kept in good condition. This also comprises frequent water exchanges, effective filtration, and monitoring of nutrient range. Moreover, the introduction of a protein skimmer and augmentation of water circulation can contribute to decreasing excess nutrients and to prevent the formation of stagnant regions in the aquarium.
Overfeeding should also be avoided and casted decaying organic matter from the aquarium should be cleaned as quickly as possible. Adequate lighting is also very important, and if there is too much or too little, it can favour the proliferation of cyanobacteria.
Cyanobacterial blooms in barrier reef aquariums are an increasing problem which may also adversely affect aquarium residents. Carefully maintain and surveillance of water quality may help avoid these blooms and support a healthy and sustainable aquarium ecosystem.
